Bouldering in Horse Flats

Horse Flats is a high-altitude bouldering area nestled in the Angeles National Forest, offering a mix of technical face climbing and powerful overhangs on gritty, coarse-grained granite. The most distinctive feature of the area is the unique friction-dependent climbing, where subtle smears and delicate footwork are essential. The bouldering is spread across several sectors, with problems ranging from V0 slabs to steep, crimpy test pieces that push into the V8 range and beyond. Given its elevation of over 5,600 feet (1,700 meters), the best season for climbing is late spring through fall, when temperatures are mild. Summers can be warm but remain manageable thanks to the shade provided by towering pine trees.

What makes Horse Flats particularly special is its remote feel despite being relatively close to Los Angeles. The peaceful forest setting, coupled with high-quality granite boulders, provides an experience reminiscent of more alpine destinations. While crash pads and spotters are recommended due to uneven landings, many problems offer safe and approachable movement, making it a great destination for climbers of all levels. Camping at the nearby Horse Flats Campground allows for multi-day trips, with basic amenities available, though visitors should bring their own water.
