Bouldering in Stone Fort

Stone Fort, just outside Chattanooga, Tennessee, is a sandstone paradise with over 500 problems, making it one of the best bouldering spots in the Southeast. The rock is known for its fine-grained texture, offering slopers, compression moves, and delicate footwork on classic problems ranging from V0 to V11 and beyond. Many of the standout problems demand power and body tension, with mantle-heavy topouts adding an extra challenge. The best season to visit is from December to February, when the cooler temperatures and lower humidity create perfect friction. However, the sandstone retains moisture, so it’s best to wait a few dry days after rain.

Access to Stone Fort is unique, as it is located on the Montlake Golf Course. Climbers must check in at the clubhouse, pay a day-use fee, and follow guidelines to respect the shared space. Despite its popularity—especially during weekends and events like the Triple Crown Bouldering competition—the area retains a laid-back vibe. Crash pad rentals are available, and the clubhouse offers snacks and drinks. Given the sandstone’s rough nature, bringing extra skin protection and a soft brush is recommended. Dogs, camping, and night climbing are not allowed to preserve the area's access and integrity.
