Bouldering in Hönö

Hönö is a rocky island in the Gothenburg archipelago and one of Sweden's top bouldering destinations. The Ersdalen nature reserve on the north side of the island holds several hundred problems on sea-polished gneiss, ranging from beginner-friendly slabs to steeper lines on rounded holds. The rock dries fast thanks to the constant wind and sun exposure, and the flat landings on many boulders make it an accessible spot — even for families and newcomers. With the ocean right at your feet and the open archipelago as backdrop, climbing here feels more like a coastal day out than a typical crag session.

The best conditions for harder climbing are in spring and autumn, when temperatures are cool enough for decent friction on the polished granite. Summer works too if you're not projecting — it's a great excuse to mix climbing with swimming and picnics on the rocks. Hönö is about an hour from Gothenburg by car, or you can take the free ferry from Lilla Varholmen, which makes it one of the most easily reached island bouldering spots in Scandinavia. Around 500 problems are documented so far, with slabs and vertical faces making up the bulk of the climbing.
